Artistic background and practice

Sonja Rijsbosch is an Amsterdam-based contemporary artist. Working mainly with acrylic paint and mixed materials, Sonja creates abstract paintings that feel like landscapes, memories and moments in motion. Her work is guided by nature, but never depicts it literally. Instead, she translates impressions of light, air, movement and atmosphere into layered compositions that invite personal interpretation.

Her visual language is expressive and tactile, combining soft, dreamlike colour fields with energetic marks, texture and movement. This balance between calm and vitality has become central to her practice: paintings that feel spacious and intuitive, yet carefully composed.

Sonja’s work often evokes the feeling of being outside — a shifting sky, sunlight through trees, wind moving through grass, or the quiet stillness after a walk. Rather than offering a fixed image or narrative, her paintings create room for the viewer’s own memories and associations.

“What I love about abstract art is the freedom it gives you to see what you feel. Everyone can bring their own meaning to a piece, which makes every experience unique. I hope my work brings together positive energy, movement and vibrancy.”

Through colour, texture and atmosphere, Sonja’s paintings explore the emotional quality of nature: not what a place looks like, but what it feels like.
